Boudoir Photography: How Do You Even Begin?

boudoir photographyThis is true to many photographers who are just about to start but suddenly realized that they cannot market it just like that. Boudoir photography has a more private nature to it, and thus, you can’t just post pictures online and shout that you do boudoir.

Know the purpose

Find out why do women do boudoir photography and the best way to market it. Only after you know the problem that your service solves can you sell it to people.

One of the best markets is engaged and married clients, women in particular. These beautiful ladies are eager to show their best sides and would like to present the best gift that only they can give. Which means you will need a different approach to do this.

Understand the concern of her partner

Not everybody would appreciate the fact to know that their significant one stripped naked in front of a guy, even though he’s their wedding photographer. Unless you’re a woman or gay, you need to build a strong, positive, and trusting relationship with the couple.

There are rarely the ‘perfect’ clients

Women come in all sizes. You can’t expect to always get one with a supermodel body who knows how to pose and express herself in front of the camera. Boudoir is a very different and private thing. You need to chill and make your clients comfortable. Pop a champagne to calm them down.

Learn to tell them that they will look good, no matter how much weight they should lose before doing a session. One way to show this is to take on ALL clients. Of course, within your capability.

Set a different website

If you are a photographer from another line, make sure that you set up a new site especially for the boudoir. People cannot appreciate seeing NSFW and (almost) nude pictures while they scroll for family and wedding portraits.

Make the site looks professional. Lots of sites out there are creating sites that simply look like a porn site.

No, it’s not supposed to be porn

Well, there are a lot of people out there who have lost their idea of what is and what is not boudoir. Nudity is often part of it, but boudoir will always have these parts covered is one or some other ways.

If you plan to get your client strip, she has to be covered in something that conceals the most private parts. This is also a selling point, as a point that is almost visible is always alluring. Like the smell of BBQ grilling before you enjoy the juicy meat.

Find a private place

There are not many choices to choose to shoot boudoir photographs. You can use your own studio, your client’s bedroom, or rent a hotel room instead.

What’s great about renting a room is that you can use it for several photoshoot sessions in one day. It does not have to be one room for one client. Although, having your own studio would be much cheaper.

Pack it in box

Boudoir is all about being private and secretive. Pack it in a lovely box with which your client can use to gift to her husband. Focus on mysterious, alluring, and sexy design for the packaging.

Bring it on!

And lastly is to take up the job! You never really learn if you never really do it. Have faith in yourself!
